Car loan rules in France
- Lenders must show the TAEG (Code de la consommation L314-1). It compounds the monthly rate and includes application fees, required insurance and broker fees.
- Leasing with an option to buy (LOA) is very common in France. Its final option d’achat works like a balloon payment.
- Early repayment compensation is capped at 1% of the amount repaid early, or 0.5% with a year or less left, never more than the interest saved, and nothing at all if you repay €10,000 or less in any 12 months (L312-34).
- Legal maximum rate (taux d’usure) for consumer loans over €6,000: 8.56% in Q4 2026. A loan above it is illegal.
- You have 14 calendar days to withdraw from the loan (L312-19).

The calculator works backward to the APR that lenders in France must disclose, and shows the same loan as a nominal rate and an effective rate. Choose Find my payment to turn a quoted rate into a monthly payment. All figures are in EUR and you can switch country at the top of the page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the TAEG?
The taux annuel effectif global is the effective annual rate French lenders must show. It includes application fees and required insurance.
What is the taux d’usure?
It is the legal maximum rate. For consumer loans over €6,000 it is 8.56% in the fourth quarter of 2026, and a loan above it is illegal.
