Car loan rules in India
- Since October 2024 banks and NBFCs must give you a Key Facts Statement (KFS) showing the annual percentage rate, including processing and third-party fees, before you sign. Banks typically finance up to 90% of the on-road price.
- Some dealers and lenders quote a flat rate, which charges interest on the full loan for the whole term. A flat rate is roughly half the true reducing-balance rate, so 7% flat is about 13% real. Choose “Flat rate” to convert.
- From 1 January 2026 RBI bans prepayment charges on floating-rate loans to individuals. Most car loans are fixed-rate, where lenders may still charge, often 2% to 5%, but only if it is shown in the Key Fact Statement. The example uses 3%.

How to use this calculator
Choose Find my APR and enter the price, your down payment, the term and the monthly payment from your offer. The calculator works backward to the APR that lenders in India must disclose, and shows the same loan as a nominal rate, an effective rate and a flat rate. Choose Find my payment to turn a quoted rate into a monthly payment. All figures are in INR and you can switch country at the top of the page.
Frequently asked questions
How is car loan EMI calculated?
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. The calculator does this for you and also works backward from an EMI to the rate.
What is the difference between a flat rate and a reducing rate?
A flat rate charges interest on the full loan for the whole term, even as you repay it. A reducing rate charges interest only on what you still owe. A 7% flat rate is about 13% on a reducing balance, so always compare reducing rates.
Are there foreclosure charges on car loans?
From 1 January 2026 RBI bans prepayment charges on floating-rate loans to individuals. Most car loans are fixed-rate, where lenders may still charge, often 2% to 5%, but only if it is shown in the Key Facts Statement.
How much car loan can I get?
Banks typically finance up to 90% of the on-road price, so plan for at least a 10% down payment plus the processing fee.
कार लोन की EMI कैसे निकाली जाती है?
EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), जहाँ P लोन की रकम, r मासिक ब्याज दर और n महीनों की संख्या है।
