What APR means on a car loan

APR stands for annual percentage rate. It is the yearly cost of borrowing money, shown as a percentage. On a car loan it covers the interest rate plus any lender fees that come out of the loan, so it gives you one number to compare between offers.

Two loans can have the same monthly payment and very different APRs if one has fees and the other does not. That is why lenders in the United States must show you the APR before you sign.

How to find your APR from your monthly payment

Dealers sometimes talk only about the monthly payment. You can still work out the rate. A car loan payment follows this formula, where L is the amount financed, r is the monthly rate (APR divided by 12), and n is the number of months:

payment = L × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n)

You know the payment, the amount, and the term, so the unknown is r. There is no simple way to rearrange the formula for it, so the calculator tests rates until the payments repay the loan to the cent. For example, a $29,000 loan over 60 months with a $587 payment works out to about 7.9% APR and roughly $6,220 in interest.

APR vs interest rate

The interest rate sets how much interest builds up on your balance. APR starts from the same rate and adds fees that reduce the money you receive, such as a loan origination fee. With no fees the two are the same. With fees, the APR is higher, and the calculator shows both when you enter a fee amount.

Frequently asked questions

What is APR on a car loan?

APR is the yearly cost of borrowing, shown as a percentage. It includes the interest rate plus certain lender fees that are rolled into the loan, so it is usually the best number for comparing offers.

How do I find my APR if I only know my monthly payment?

Enter the amount financed, the term, and the payment into the calculator. It works backward to find the rate that makes your payments repay the loan exactly. If the lender took fees out of the loan, add them so the APR reflects the true cost.

Is APR the same as the interest rate?

Not always. The interest rate sets your monthly interest charge. APR also counts fees that reduce the money you actually receive, so APR is equal to or higher than the interest rate.

What is a good APR for a car loan?

It depends on your credit score, the loan term, whether the car is new or used, and current market rates. The most reliable way to judge an offer is to get quotes from a credit union, a bank, and the dealer, then compare their APRs for the same amount and term.

Does a longer loan term mean a higher APR?

Often, yes. Lenders usually charge higher rates on longer terms, and a longer term also means you pay interest for more months, so total interest rises even when the monthly payment drops.

Will this match the APR on my loan paperwork?

It should be very close. Lenders may treat an odd first payment date or certain add-ons differently, so the APR on your loan documents is the official figure.
